Treating your skin concerns during pregnancy & breastfeeding

Treating your skin concerns during pregnancy & breastfeeding

Firstly – Congratulations! Along with the excitement of falling pregnant comes a few lifestyle changes – so in this article, we share our advice on pregnancy-safe skincare and cosmetic treatments.

Whether you’re battling a sudden case of hormonal acne, or dark patches appearing across your cheeks, you may be on the hunt for some new beauty products and wondering what’s safe to use with a baby on board.

Some skincare products contain ingredients that pose a threat to a developing fetus, and others have to be avoided postpartum since they can pass into breast milk. We recommend that you double-check ingredient lists and ask your GP or obstetrician if there’s anything you are concerned about.

Here’s our quick reference of what’s in and what’s out during pregnancy:

What to steer clear of

A few skincare ingredients can affect the development of growing foetuses. In terms of home care – things to avoid are:

What’s safe to use

Is laser treatment safe during pregnancy?

In terms of laser and light therapies, there is contention amongst laser specialists about what is safe. It is generally not recommended to undergo laser skin resurfacing treatments while pregnant. Please consult your doctor before undergoing any cosmetic procedures during pregnancy.

Which skin peels are safe in pregnancy?

Mild superficial peels containing lactic acids and glycolic acid are generally acceptable but just be prepared that your skin may react differently to normal during pregnancy due to hormonal changes.

Skincare advice

We are often asked about safe skincare in pregnancy, so we have shared some of our favourite products below. Please consider your individual concerns and skin type when updating your skincare routine. Remember that your skin may change during pregnancy, just as your body does, so if any new concerns arise, please pop in and see us for a skin consultation.

Sunscreen

Pregnant women should take special care to avoid too much sun exposure, as pregnancy hormones can increase the risk of melasma. This skin disorder results in pigmentation on the face, especially the forehead and cheeks. Melasma is extremely difficult to treat, so it’s wise to be sun smart! We recommend the Mesoprotech range of sun protection by Mesoestetic. There are options for all skin types and concerns in the range. Our clinicians can help you find the best option for your complexion. If you develop melasma, please come and see us post-pregnancy. We have treatments that are highly effective in reducing melasma and pigmentation.

Vitamin C serum

Vitamin C serums are safe to use throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Vitamin C  reduces pigmentation, brightens the complexion and prevents DNA damage. We recommend the Energy C Intensive Cream and Eye Contour from Mesoestetic.  The brightening formulation responds to the first signs of aging. Its optimal concentration in stable vitamin C unifies the skin tone providing it with brightness. Its antioxidant properties counteract the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays, preventing premature photoaging. The combination of its active substances provides moisturising and improves fine wrinkles and expression lines.

Vitamin B serum

Vitamin B helps to keep skin hydrated, reduce redness and pigmentation and improve skin immunity. Daily use of Vitamin B will enhance skin clarity and luminosity.  Hytratontic Mist and Hydravital Mask from Mesoestetic a good options.  For many women with rosacea, their symptoms can be exacerbated by the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy and breastfeeding. Adding vitamin B to your daily skin regime can help to reduce redness and dry skin.

Hydration

A good moisturiser is an essential part of your daily skincare routine as it helps to support a healthy skin barrier. However, using the incorrect moisturiser can cause breakouts or increased sun sensitivity.

All skin types

When it comes to skin plumping and hydration, hyaluronic acid (HA) should be a go-to ingredient, especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It works well and poses no threat to mom or baby. We recommend ha densimatrix by Mesoestetic. Safe to use in the morning and night, this intensive concentrate combines pure hyaluronic acid in multiple molecular structures for absorption at different levels. It promotes deep skin hydration and plumping of fine lines and softens skin.

Combination to oily skin

Hydra-vital light by Mesoestetic is a refreshing and revitalising moisturising gel cream. It provides short and long-term moisturising while protecting against pollution. It provides a feeling of freshness, softness and comfort. Ideal for normal, combination and oily skin.

Normal to dry skin

hydra-vital factor k by Mesoestetic is a rich moisturising and nourishing cream with vitamin E for normal and dry skin. It restores nutrition and moisture levels and protects against premature aging. Another effective option is the Hydravital factor k mask, a rich moisturising and nourishing cream that provides elasticity and softness and prevents dehydration.

Dry and sensitive skin

For those of you with dry and sensitised skin, nourishment and hydration are key. We recommend Hydracream fusion by Mesoestitic. It is rich in squalene, a vegetable oil in harmony with the skin providing nourishment and elasticity. It is easily absorbed without leaving any oily residue. For a hydration boost – the Hydravital mask delivers instant high-quality hydration. It can be used twice a week to nourish, soothe and balance dry and dehydrated skin.
