Skincare tips every woman over 50 needs to know

Skincare tips every woman over 50 needs to know

There are so many factors, both internal and external, that affect our skin as we age. With the right lifestyle choices and skincare treatments, you can keep your skin looking healthy for years to come. We share our tips to have great skin in your 50s and beyond.

Please wear sunscreen every day

We sound like a broken record, but if there is one beauty rule we’d tell our 15-year-old selves, it would be to wear good quality sunscreen every day. Nothing damages your skin more than exposure to the sun. It’s the number one cause of skin cancer and a major cause of brown spots and wrinkles. It’s important that you choose a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and one that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. We recommend the Mesoprotech range, and can help you find the right formula for your skin type.

Invest in quality skin care products

Finding a skincare routine and products that work for you is essential. Our team can help you find the right products to suit your skin type and address your concerns.

If you have oily skin, consider yourself lucky! Oily skin tends to develop fewer wrinkles. If you have sensitive skin, you should test all of your products on your neck or arms before you use them. That product you loved a few years ago may now cause irritation or redness.

You may have also noticed the older you get, the drier your skin becomes. Our skin experiences a slowdown in oil production and cell turnover as we age, especially after menopause.

What to do if your skin is dry

To keep dry skin in the best condition possible, it’s important to cleanse with products that won’t zap skin of moisture. You also have to exfoliate. Most importantly, you’ll need to keep your skin moisturised throughout the day.

Here are some tips to keep your face from drying out:

  • Don’t use hot water. This only strips your skin of oils. Instead, use lukewarm water.
  • Use a cream or oil-based cleanser formulated for dry skin
  • Thick, moisturising creams and oils will help lock moisture in. Always apply at night and in the morning under your makeup.
  • Consider investing in a product containing hyaluronic acid. It effectively plumps the skin and helps it absorb and retain moisture.
  • If you have dry skin, you likely have flaky skin, so you should exfoliate once or twice a week. Consider using alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which are a great option for most skin types.
  • To keep the rest of your body moisturised, avoid drying soaps in the shower and opt for creamy body washes instead. After your shower, it’s important to moisturise.

Find an oil you love

Oils are one of the hottest trends in skincare today. Everyone’s talking about their favourite oils, what aroma they like the best, and what works best for their skin types. Many face oils feature high-quality natural ingredients and glide on smoothly to leave skin feeling plump and dewy.

Try retinol

These days there are great retinol options available over the counter. The secret is vitamin A derivatives retinol and prescription-strength retinoids (i.e., Retin A). A good retinol cream every night will help diminish fine lines and wrinkles because it penetrates to the lower layers where the collagen is. It’s a good idea to start slowly by applying it at night after cleansing initially twice a week, then gradually build up to nightly. If you’re worried about irritating your skin, a good trick is to ‘sandwich’ your vitamin A by layering a moisturizer below or over the top.

Look brighter with vitamin C

Incorporating a vitamin C product into your routine is another good idea if you’re looking for brighter, healthier-looking skin. You can find cleansers, serums, moisturisers and toners formulated with vitamin C. We recommend a vitamin C serum as they are heavy-lifters and are more highly concentrated than other product.

Have you heard of vitamin B3?

It’s more commonly known as niacinamide – a hardworking ingredient that doesn’t get enough airtime. Niacinamide is an excellent multi-tasker whether you’re dealing with acne, sensitive skin, dryness or dark spots. Vitamin B3 also has excellent antioxidant and anti-aging benefits. It helps with pigmentation and moisture retention in the skin.

Consider injectables

If you want to reduce the signs of wrinkles and the loss of volume in your face, anti-wrinkle injections and fillers are the way to go. Anti-wrinkle injections can lift your eyes so you appear more awake and younger while also softening the smile lines along your eyes. Fillers can plump up your cheeks and lip contours.

Try chemical peels and lasers

Lasers are used for a variety of skin problems. We have a range of non-ablative lasers that are highly effective in improving the appearance of age spots, sun spots, scars, and uneven texture.

You may also consider a light chemical peel to improve your skin tone and texture and soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
