How does CO₂ laser treatments work on scars?

All scars, including acne scars, are thick connective tissue replacing damaged skin. Laser scar treatments are designed to make a scar appear less noticeable. A specific energy level laser beam is directed at the affected area penetrating the skin and causing the tissue to break down. The depth of treatment is adjusted according to your condition. Laser treatment penetrates the outer layers of skin to stimulate new, healthy skin cell growth. The laser removes older, damaged layers of skin so that new, healthy skin can grow in its place.

Collagen production is stimulated, and the body naturally heals itself by forming new skin. Although laser treatment cannot completely remove scars, it can make them less noticeable and uncomfortable. Laser treatments are, in essence, creating a new scar in place of an old one. However, the new skin should grow more uniformly.

What results can I expect from CO₂ laser treatment?

After your skin heals, which may take up to 3 weeks, patients will experience a period of their skin appearing slightly pink. During this time, you will see improvements in skin texture and tone. Full results can be seen 3-6 months after the initial treatment once the skin has completely healed. Improvements from CO₂ laser treatment can be seen for many years after treatment. Results can be prolonged with diligent use of SPF, avoided sun exposure and the correct at-home skin care maintenance.

What does CO₂ laser treatment involve?

The area to be treated is cleansed, and a numbing cream is applied. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the treatment is performed. The treatment area is occasionally cooled during the procedure to keep you comfortable. The Clinical Practitioner will place wet towels or gauze around the scarred area to absorb laser pulses that would otherwise affect healthy skin. The therapist will pass the laser over the scar tissue. After the treatment is complete, the Clinical Practitioner will apply an ointment and a clean dressing to cover the area. The treated area may remain red for several hours after the procedure. There may also be mild swelling and stinging that might feel similar to a sunburn. After the procedure, doctors often recommend applying moisturising lotion to the area at least twice daily and refraining from applying makeup until the redness has subsided.

How long does a CO₂ Laser treatment take?

The exact time depends on the size of the area that is being treated. The timeframe includes 30 minutes for a topical numbing cream to be applied and take effect prior to treatment.

What areas can be treated with CO₂ laser treatments?

This treatment is suitable for almost any scar on almost any location of the face or body.

Are CO₂ laser treatments painful?

This treatment does cause some discomfort, but we ensure that our patients are comfortable throughout the whole procedure. The sensation that is often felt is similar to a “pins and needles” sensation. Generally, over-the-counter pain medication is sufficient for pain relief post-procedure.

This treatment is not compatible with all skin tones. It works best on fairer complexions. Persons of colour may experience better results with radiofrequency therapies for scar reduction. CO2 laser treatments may not be safe for those with specific health problems. This treatment is not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Is there any downtime following a CO₂ laser treatment?

Your skin will scab and peel 2-7 days after treatment and will be pink for 3-4 weeks. The exact healing time varies from person to person.

What aftercare is required?

Clients will be provided with detailed and step-by-step instructions on the pre-and post-care requirements and supported by our Clinicians to achieve the best possible results. We recommend that you wear an SPF. Aftercare may include cold compresses and applying an emollient ointment. Avoid exposure to sunlight and picking or scrubbing the skin.

The best treatment is going to depend heavily on your scarring and goals. Your clinical practitioner will be able to guide you through the process, offering you recommendations for a successful treatment plan. It is also possible that you may benefit from both, used in intelligence sequence to achieve optimal results.
