What are Fillers?
Over time our body’s ability to produce collagen and elastin decreases. Our skin’s once youthful appearance is affected by a loss of volume. Visibility of lines and wrinkles combines with a loss of volume in cheeks and under eye areas. Dermal fillers address this by adding volume to the affected areas. They can fill creases, folds, hollows, as well as acne and surgical scars.
Our experienced team can volumise certain areas and enhance your features while still looking natural.
Treatment details:
Fillers are soft, mouldable gels made from a naturally occurring compound in the skin’s barrier (hyaluronic acid). Fillers add volume to the areas of the face where they are injected. They smooth out wrinkles in the face by replacing volume under creases, folds, hollows, and scars. Fillers can also act as a cushion underneath the previous folds it has corrected. The cushion reduces how much the skin can crease with facial movements, like frowning, preventing the wrinkle from reforming. They lock in moisture and provide hydrating benefits for the skin. There is evidence to suggest that fillers also stimulate natural collagen production in your skin.
Fillers can be injected anywhere that volume is required to fill in or plump up a fold, a sagging structural feature, a wrinkle or a hollow. Fillers can also be used to enhance facial features.
The most common sites for filler injections are:
- Frown lines
- Grooves and folds around the mouth
- Smile lines and jowl lines
- Tear trough hollows under the eyes
- Lips
- Forehead and temple
- Cheekbones and chin in the case of a recessed chin
- Nose
- Jawline
- Surgical scars or indented post-acne scars on the face or anywhere on the body
Fillers are very safe, and our practitioners are highly qualified. The main ingredient in fillers is a compound that occurs naturally in the skin (hyaluronic acid), so allergic reactions are extremely rare. As with any procedure, your practitioner will discuss any potential risks and concerns before your treatment, so you are confident and informed before deciding to proceed.
In most cases, you will be able to return to your normal daily activities straight away. There may be some temporary redness that can be covered with light makeup. Bruising can occur, but we do our best to minimise bruising with post-treatment pressure on the needle entry points.
You will experience swelling for a few hours post-treatment, but it is not usually uncomfortable. It settles relatively quickly depending on your skin type, the site of the injection and the amount of product used.
Lip enhancements require more time for swelling to subside, so you may prefer to have this procedure after work instead of during the day.
We recommend revisiting the clinic for a follow-up consultation and moulding within a day or two post-procedure. We prefer not to massage too firmly or mould the filler immediately after injection as this can lead to unnecessary bruising.
The injected fillers will often move slightly over the first day, so post-injection massage and moulding are necessary. This involves smoothing out the gel padding to ensure that there are no lumps and that the filler provides the maximum repair and support in the correct area.
Anti-wrinkle injections are muscle-relaxing solutions placed via a series of small injections into individual muscles that are causing wrinkles. They prevent the muscles from making unnecessary facial expressions and further creasing and damaging the skin, preventing wrinkles in the long term.
On the other hand, fillers are made of safe gel-like compounds injected under the skin for instant plumping of lines and creases, so you appear younger by replacing the volume you have lost. Anti-wrinkle injections stop the muscle from creating lines, and fillers add volume to fill the lines where the skin has been previously creased.
No, fillers will not stretch out your skin. When used for anti-aging purposes, fillers restore lost volume in areas where the skin is already lax. The fillers themselves are soft enough to move with the skin without stretching it out. Fillers are placed slightly deeper at specific points to support the skin without any stretching for facial contouring treatments. There is also sufficient evidence to suggest that when fillers are injected, they stimulate a regenerative response in the collagen matrix of your skin, which means that fillers may even contribute to preserving natural elasticity in your skin. They do not stretch it out.
