What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Autologous Platelet Rich Plasma, commonly referred to as PRP is a natural and chemical-free procedure to keep the skin and hair looking youthful and healthy. PRP is used to rejuvenate sun-damaged skin, improve fine lines, and reduce pigmentation on the face, neck and body. It can also improve the visible signs of scarring, non-healing ulcers and stretch marks.
Treatment details:
PRP treatments involve injecting a small amount of one’s blood into areas with visible signs of ageing. The injection activates the body’s natural healing process and can reduce the soft tissue damage that causes the skin to age. Platelets, which are found within our bloodstream, contain growth factors that play an important role in speeding up recovery time from injury and creating new cells to replace those lost due to trauma and UV exposure.
PRP is derived from a sample of your blood. In one session, we take a small sample, extract the PRP using state of the art centrifuge technology and inject it into your dermal tissues to repair, strengthen and boost the overall health of your skin. The process of extraction, harvesting and insertion makes a considerable difference to the effectiveness of the treatment. We have the latest harvesting system together with experienced injectors and a specialised injection handpiece for best results.
PRP injections repair the collagen and elastin fibres in your skin. Results may take a few weeks to begin to show. Because PRP relies on the natural regeneration of skin structures, full results take at least three months to show following your treatment. You should notice skin volume and elasticity restored. Your skin will be lighter, brighter, plumper, more hydrated and strengthened. We recommend three treatments four weeks apart to achieve the best results. Maintenance treatments every 6-12 months can further improve results.
PRP is a low-risk procedure because PRP is sourced from your own body.
PRP treatments are not suitable for anyone who is:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Individuals with immune disorders or people taking immune-suppressing medications
- If you have a cold sore in the treatment area, we advise using antiviral medication before and after your treatment. Talk to us about this before your appointment.
If you are taking medication and supplements that reduce platelet activity, please let your clinical team know as these will need to be stopped at least two weeks prior to treatment.
There is no aftercare required. However, we recommend that your treatment areas are well protected from sun exposure for the first few days following treatment.
Clinical studies show that while not everybody will respond to PRP, it is effective in most healthy people. The clinical results are variable because PRP relies on your immune system, so the better your diet, lifestyle, and immune system, the more likely you are to respond to PRP. Pre-menopausal patients tend to get better results.
